Chapter 1
Technology and Business
"Information technology and business are becoming inextricably interwoven. I don't think anybody can talk meaningful about one without talking about the other."
Bill Gates
"I believe that not much happens of any significance when we are in our comfort zone"       Bob Parsons
As Bill Gates says the combination of technology and business are something that is inevitable and the faster technology advances the more benefits it can bring to business while at the same time making it that much more difficult to keep up with.  Companies now have full time positions to keep their teams and departments aware of what technology they should currently be using, what they should be looking to implement in the near future and what they will be using in the next couple years.
These titles go from:
  • Chief Technology Officer
  • Chief Information Officer
  • Applications Engineers
  • Database Administrators
  • Director Of Technology
  • Information Technology Director
  • Senior Programmer Analyst
  • Executive Web Administrator
  • Software or Database Engineer
  • Digital Marketing Executive
and on and on into the hundreds.  One of the biggest problems is that unless you are part of a big corporation with vast resources it is almost impossible to make room in the budget for even one of these professionals let alone an entire team of them.
It is no longer a question of whether you need technology and cloud based applications in your business the only question is how much can you can afford.  Discussing affordability is much more then money.  Money almost becomes least concern when you consider all the time it can take to:
  • Put Together A List Of Technology Professionals
  • Interview and Discuss Possibilities
  • Decide Where Your Company Is Now
  • Decide What Are The Most Immediate Needs
  • Figure The Time It Will Take To Implement
  • Figure The Time It Will Take To Train The Staff
  • Estimate The Time It Will Take To See Results
  • Estimate The Time And Resources It Will Take To Maintain It
The advantages that technology can bring to business are available in every area including:
  • Customer Management
  • Marketing
  • Communications
  • Quarterly Reporting and Projections
  • Inventory Management
  • Business Processes and Systems
  • Time and Employee Management
Many companies even with all the new and relatively simple technologies available still haven't made any substantial improvements in their business technologies since upgrading from the desktop phone to the cell phone or from voice mail to email.
In the next chapter we will discuss how a business that is current with their technology operates and takes care of their customers and clients.

Chapter 2
Today's Business Environment
"Communication can't always follow the top down model.  With the fluidity of information in business today, leaders need to be masterful listeners; they need to be able to receive as well as send."
Joseph Badaracco
Today's business leaders are using technology in every area of their business and in most cases hosting this technology in the cloud for all of the advantages the cloud offers:
  • Economies of Scale
  • Increased Infrastructure
  • Globalize Workforce As Easy As Issuing A Log In
  • Streamlining
  • Reduce Hardware Costs
  • Monitor Projects and Communications
  • Share Plans, Documents and Contacts
  • Less Travel Needed
  • Minimize Software Needed
  • Improve Flexibility
  • Reduce Technical Staff and Employees
Today's successful businesses have access to all their company data, customers lists, flow charts and action plans immediately from anywhere they can access the Internet.  They collaborate with teams on the same documents from locations around the world simultaneously.  They publish company information and customer engagement media worldwide at the touch of a button.  They videoconference with groups of people and record these interactions for future use.  They calculate billable hours, invoice and record payments all from an Internet dashboard.  They hold and record conference calls with hundreds of people.  The find experts in all fields and hire them as consultants.  They collect and manage customer feedback then integrate the solutions almost instantaneously.
